Sport Massage - 60 Mins: What to Do in the First 48 Hours

The most important rule after a 60-minute sports massage is simple: give your body a real recovery window. I’ve had people step off the table saying their body “feels better than it has in quite some time, ” and that’s exactly why I don’t want you to undo it with a hard workout, a hot tub, or dehydration. Here in Clearwater, heat and humidity make it even easier to get wiped out after bodywork, so the first 48 hours are about water, gentle movement, and letting the work settle.
First 24 hours after sports massage: recovery beats “pushing through”
Sports massage focuses on the needs of athletes and people who are extremely physically active. It’s effective, and it can leave you feeling loose and a little tender at the same time. That’s normal. In the first 24 hours, I generally recommend you treat your body like it’s in a repair phase.
Do in the first 24 hours: drink extra water, take an easy walk, and keep your day simple.
Do this today
- Hydrate on purpose. In Clearwater’s warm, humid weather, you can feel fine and still be behind on fluids. Sip water steadily for the rest of the day.
- Eat for recovery. A simple meal with protein and carbs supports tissue repair. Think chicken or tofu with rice, yogurt with fruit, or eggs and toast.
- Move gently. A relaxed walk and light range-of-motion usually help you stay loose without irritating what I just worked on.
Skip this today
- No heavy lifting, HIIT, or long runs. Give it 24 to 48 hours before you load those tissues hard again.
- Avoid hot tubs, saunas, and long hot baths. Heat can ramp up post-massage inflammation and make you feel more sore.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours. It’s dehydrating, and it can make next-day soreness feel worse.
Hours 24–48: light activity only, especially if you train near the beach
By tomorrow, many people feel noticeably better, sometimes even “the next day I felt so much better!!!” That’s your cue to be smart, not brave. Keep training light. If you’re a weekend-distance runner logging miles near the beach, remember the combo of sun, humidity, and sweat can sneak up on you fast.
My rule of thumb: If you still feel tender to the touch, keep it to walking, easy cycling, gentle mobility, and plenty of water.
What to keep doing
- Keep hydration steady. Add electrolytes if you’re sweating a lot, especially in Clearwater’s heat.
- Do gentle range-of-motion for areas I focused on. If I showed you a stretch, keep it short and easy.
- Prioritize sleep. That’s when your body does a lot of the repair work.
What to avoid until you’re past 48 hours
- Deep, aggressive stretching. You can irritate already-softened tissue.
- Prolonged sun and heat exposure, including hot tubs.
- “Testing” the area that was bothering you with max effort.
Soreness, bruised feelings, and tight rebounds: what’s normal this week
Mild soreness after sports massage is common, especially if I worked into areas that have been overworked or guarded. It often feels like a workout soreness, not sharp pain. Most people notice it fades in 24 to 72 hours.
Good sign: you feel looser when you move, even if you’re a bit tender when you press on the area.
Use cold for sharp, specific spots
If one area feels hot, sharp, or irritated, use an ice pack for 10 to 15 minutes and then give it a break. If you notice swelling, light compression can help, but don’t crank it down. And if something feels off in a way that doesn’t match normal soreness, let me know.
A quick note for commuters and desk-tight bodies
A lot of people across Clearwater, Largo, Pinellas Park, Seminole, Dunedin, and Safety Harbor carry tension from driving and long sitting. If your neck, hips, or low back tends to tighten back up, set a reminder to stand, breathe, and do two minutes of gentle movement a few times a day.
Simple habits that protect your sports massage results (no fancy products)
You don’t need a shelf of products to keep your results. The basics usually do more than any gadget.
- Keep water nearby. If you’re training outdoors in Clearwater, plan hydration like you plan your workout.
- Warm shower is fine. Keep it short. Skip long, steamy heat sessions for a day or two.
- Gentle stretching only if it feels easy. If you’re straining to get into the stretch, it’s too much right now.
- Consider percussion therapy next time. It’s an excellent add-on for this service when you want extra work on stubborn muscle tension, especially in bigger muscle groups.
If you found this article by searching “massage near me” or “massage spa near me, ” this is the part most people miss: the results you love come from the session and what you do right after.
When I want you to reach out (and when I want you to rest)
After a sports massage, it’s normal to feel relaxed, a little sore, and sometimes surprisingly tired. It’s also normal to realize you had tightness you didn’t even notice until it let go. If you’re in the Northwood Plaza area, I know schedules can be tight. Still, don’t ignore unusual symptoms.
Reach out to me if you notice: severe swelling, sharp or unusual pain that’s getting worse, numbness, or anything that feels alarming instead of “normal sore.”
I take your feedback seriously. If I think something needs rest instead of more hands-on work, I’ll tell you. That honesty matters, especially for people who have tried a lot of places and felt worse after.
"LaToya said that she might not be able to massage me because if there is inflammation, it needs rest!!!!!"
